Making Your Freelance Work Accessible: A Practical Guide
Accessibility isn't just a legal requirement — it's a quality standard that expands your reach and demonstrates professional excellence. Here's how to make accessibility a core part of your freelance practice.
Accessibility as Professional Standard, Not Compliance Checkbox
The most sophisticated freelancers in digital fields treat accessibility not as a regulatory hurdle but as a quality indicator. Accessible design is clearer, more usable, and more robust than inaccessible design. Accessible content reaches a wider audience. Accessible code is more maintainable. When you internalize accessibility as a quality standard rather than an external requirement, the work gets better across all dimensions.
This perspective also positions you more credibly with clients who are themselves committed to inclusive practices. Many larger EU organizations now include accessibility requirements in procurement criteria. If you can't credibly discuss your accessibility approach, you'll be screened out before a conversation begins.
Accessible Content Creation
If your freelance work involves writing, content strategy, or communications, accessibility touches how you structure documents, describe images, write link text, and use heading hierarchies. Use headings that reflect genuine document structure rather than visual styling. Write descriptive alt text that communicates the content and purpose of images. Use plain language that doesn't unnecessarily exclude readers with cognitive disabilities.
For video content, captions and transcripts aren't optional under the EAA for most service categories. Build these into your production process from the start — retrofitting captions is time-consuming and expensive relative to capturing them during production.
Accessible Design and Development Practices
For designers and developers, the foundational accessible practices are well-established: minimum 4.5:1 color contrast for body text, never relying solely on color to convey information, ensuring all interactive elements are keyboard-accessible, providing visible focus indicators, and testing with screen readers. These aren't optional enhancements — they're base requirements for EU-compliant digital products.
Include accessibility testing in your project timeline and quote it in your proposals. Clients who balk at the cost of accessibility testing are signaling that they don't understand their legal obligations — which is itself useful information about the engagement. Track accessibility testing time separately in your time logs to demonstrate its scope and value.
Building an Accessibility Portfolio and Capability Statement
Document your accessibility work specifically. Which projects met WCAG AA? What tools did you use for testing? What issues did you find and remediate? This documentation, presented in your professional profile, builds the accessibility credibility that wins increasingly important engagements in the post-EAA market.
Consider obtaining recognized accessibility certification — CPACC or WAS from the IAAP are internationally recognized credentials that signal genuine expertise rather than superficial familiarity. In a market where demand for accessibility expertise is growing rapidly, credentials help convert interest into engagement.
